This course is the first part of a 5-part course Genetics for Breeders and Veterinarians.

In this first part, you will:

  • Learn about the fascinating structure and function of DNA. What is a gene? How are DNA recipes made into proteins? What is the function of proteins?
  • Learn the basics about genes and how they are regulated. And what happens if regulation does not work? Where are ‘DNA cops’ needed? What are mutations? Are they always harmful? No – in fact, they can create new, useful traits.
  • Learn how parental genes are passed on to offspring. Genes are on chromosomes, which come in pairs. One member of each pair of chromosomes is passed on to offspring.
  • Explore practical examples in dogs, cats and horses. Are short limbs in a dog the result of a mutation? How are long coat and wither height inherited?
