Part 2. Transmission of Genes from Parents to Offspring
This is the second part of the 5-part course Genetics for Breeders and Vets.
Why are no two individuals ever born exactly alike?
Why are relatives more similar to each other than to other individuals in the population?
Why is the influence of the dam on the characteristics of her offspring greater than that of the sire?
In this part, you will learn about
- The formation of gametes and fertilisation. How are genes actually get passed from parent to offspring? Find out how paternal and maternal chromosomes can exchange parts and how certain genes are always inherited together.
- The shared genome of relatives. We learn what a genetic relationship is.
- Mitochondrial DNA. Learn why mitochondrial DNA is only passed from the dam to her offspring. We will also look at some mitochondrial DNA mutations in dogs.
Content of the course
This second part of the course consists of lessons, quizzes and a glossary. In addition, each lesson has a discussion section where you can ask questions about the lesson topics.
Your instructor Katariina Mäki, PhD (Animal Breeding), will be present during the course. She will help you if you have any problems and will also answer questions on the course platform.

Learning quizzes
Short learning quizzes after each lesson.
Glossary
The breeding and genetics terms taught in the course are collected in a glossary, where you can always check what a term means.
Possibility to ask questions
A question and comment section after each lesson – you can ask all those questions that have been bothering you for years. Remember, there are no stupid questions!
Course certificate
